Icelandic Barbie, 2008/2011 - Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir

About Icelandic Barbie
Like many of Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir's works, this plushly colored, ethereal photograph is woven with a sense of perversion and danger. "I think that an artist is a person who does strange, unnecessary things so you don't have to," says Guðleifsdóttir.

Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir's photography contains a unique sensibility—it is dramatic and spare without being stark. Both a landscape and a portrait photographer, she pulls the same magnetic qualities from her gorgeous self-portraits as she does from her luminous snow-scape and coastline images.
Guðleifsdóttir came to fine art photography through an unlikely path—the online photo-sharing site Flickr. Her breathtaking imagery of her native Iceland and her mastery of editing have made Guðleifsdóttir an icon of digital photography. Although she accepts assignments for commercial projects, the most prominent being an ad campaign for Toyota in Iceland, she is ultimately a fine art photographer.
