    About The Work

Richard Misrach series of photographs showing the aftermath of the 1991 Oakland-Berkeley fire was not released by the artist until 2011, twenty years after one of the worst disasters in California's history. Misrach says he waited to release the work out of respect for the fire's victims and to avoid being part of the media spectacle. The quiet, contemplative images are sad and haunting reminders of human powerlessness in the face of nature.
