Ellipses have appeared in Robert Mangold's work since the early '70s, when he painted them horizontally inside rectangles. He says that he came back to ellipses in the '80s. "I wanted to use it vertically," he says, "but if you stand an oval up vertically it kind of looks heavy on the bottom so I decided to make it in an egg form, with the ellipse fatter at the top and narrower at the bottom. This gave buoyancy to the form."Read Less

An iconic Minimalist, Robert Mangold is a past master at using colors and forms in unexpected ways, fusing differently shaped canvases and drawn shapes to create new, formalist structures.
