Robyn O'Neil Bio

About The Artist

Artist Robyn O'Neil said in a 2008 interview, "I can't stress enough how important it is to choose what the people you draw or paint are going to wear." In an attempt to create normal-looking people, many of the subjects in her drawings are depicted either in cloaks or all black sweat suits with white tennis shoes, an outfit which O'Neil claims works as an equalizer among the men in her drawings. Many of O'Neil's works are based on history and popular culture, with settings that feel simultaneously familiar and strange.

O'Neil has had many solo exhibitions and was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. O'Neil was awarded the Hunting Art Prize in 2009, and in 2010 she attended Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School in Los Angeles.
