Rosy Keyser

Rosy Keyser embraces a lack of rules, seeking to use materials and forms that incorporate painterly techniques and textures on a flat surface. Sawdust, oil paint, enamel, and rusted steel, among other things, are applied to canvas in broad strokes. Each material builds upon and responds to the others, supporting “references to natural forces, our instinctual attraction to rhythm, the latent power of poetry, and historical concepts of the sacred versus the profane.” Keyser often reveals the frame of her works and uses it as another formal quality that might inspire spontaneous interaction, with reference to Polynesian stick charts and navigational maps. Her cadence is often unconventional, seeking to “recast how paint is portrayed” and maintain the potential dissonance of her materials. Keyser has exhibited at institutions including Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Zabludowicz Collection, London, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark, and Ballroom Marfa, Texas, among a number of domestic and international galleries.
