About the Work
In this print, Sara Greenberger Rafferty intervenes in a still of Madeline Kahn with stains reminiscent of blood, saliva, and tears, and pencil lines that trace a pair of glasses around the actress's obscured eyes. The resulting image, decidedly ghostly, hovers between photography, collage, and watercolor.
About the Artist
Sara Greenberger Rafferty's work is inspired by myriad sources, including popular culture, television in specific, photographs of singular performers, and alternative color theories. She explores issues of feminism with a great deal of humor and wisdom.
A graduate of the Columbia University School of the Arts MFA Program, Greenberger Rafferty has been championed by the likes of Roberta Smith, the New York Times art critic, amongst others. She has been the subject of well-received solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1 in 2006 and Rachel Uffner in 2009, and has more than 5 exhibitions opening around the world in the coming year. Her work is included among the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
