Song Dong is an avant garde installation artist from China. Conceptual interests are at the centre of his practice, which embraces photography, installation, and video. Emerging from a strong Beijing-based avant garde performance art community, Song Dong´s practice explores notions of perception, transience, and the ephemeral nature of existence. This print depicts the recto and verso faces of a house key. It was selected as a symbol of Song’s Mother’s collected household items and personal objects. The key makes up a very small part of Song’s ongoing installation project, Waste Not, which he started in 2005, comprising a carefully arranged display of the thousands of items hoarded by his mother and kept in her house. Song’s mother survived the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward, during which millions of Chinese died or were placed in re-education camps (as was Song’s father), and the installation is shown as an extreme reaction by Song’s mother to the experience of that era.
