Spencer Finch

In his installations and works on paper, Finch attempts to depict the most elusive of subjects and continually explores the nature of color, light, memory, and perception. Incorporating the scientific method into his work, Finch takes measures to ensure accuracy of representation, using devices like a colorimeter—which reads the average color and temperature of light—and precise measurements of time and conditions; however, despite his efforts, definitive results and empirical truths prove illusory. Instead, his industrial means reach a poetic end, and the works operate in the gap between the objectivity of scientific data and the subjectivity of creative expression.
