This work from British artist Susie Hamilton is from a series entitled Dining Rooms, which depicts distant figures and glittering ballrooms as shadows and silhouettes of color, contour and contrast.The artist says of this series, “these Dining Room paintings are versions of my earlier works based in natural wilderness—the arctic, the desert, the jungle. This time the wilderness is merely metaphorical, as in my paintings of casinos, shopping malls, supermarkets. These urban settings are far from the icecap or the Sahara, but the series all represent a wilderness of consumption where figures, shuffling up the aisles of Asda or carried on escalators in Westfield, are wandering, searching, desiring and at the same time dissatisfied.”
