Suzanne Joelson Bio

About The Artist

Lyrical and decorative, Suzanne Joelson's abstract paintings combine hints of tapestry-like pattern with broader, brushier areas of color. She began her career in the theater, designing costumes, lighting and scenery for performances by Merce Cunningham and John Cage, among others. More recently, she has exhibited at galleries including Nature Morte in New Delhi, Fernando Alcolea in Barcelona, and White Columns in New York. She holds awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the National Academy of Design, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
