Beach Towels

As the ultimate symbol of popular leisure, beaches are especially significant to art history, and today, no one is more renowned for using beaches as a subject than photographer Massimo Vitali, who shoots a large format camera from high above Mediterranean beaches in order document social phenomena such as tourism, conformity, and mass gatherings. In collaboration with organizations such as Studio Voltaire, Other Criteria and the Art Production Fund’s WOW (Works on Whatever) series, contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Barbara Kruger and Ryan McGinley are producing imagery on beach towels.
