About The Work
This photograph is part of Tina Barney’s “Theater of Manners” series where the artist captured images of her family and friends in their East Coast affluent surroundings during the 1980s-90s, typically at family events such as christenings, vacations, graduations, and Christmas celebrations. This wedding scene is representative her pioneering “directional” mode of making pictures–part candid, part tableau. Barney's direction ranges from carefully lighting and posing her subjects to simply asking them to repeat a spontaneous gesture. Here the effect is an up close and intimate access to her subjects.
