Barbados, 2012 - Tom Goldenberg
About the Work
In this painting, Goldenberg depicts a tumultuous seascape, with waves crashing dramatically against the rocks. Covering most of the underlying photograph with paint, the relationship between the painted image and the scene captured by the artist's camera remains ambiguous.

Combining modern technology with traditional painting techniques, Tom Goldenberg creates vivid depictions of the natural world. While he employs digital photography as the basis for his landscapes, using his snapshots as preparatory studies, Goldenberg paints exclusively with handmade pigments that he grinds himself, resulting in brilliant, saturated color. Additionally, the artist has created works that integrate his photographs more overtly, painting directly onto the prints. In these images, his painterly brushstrokes merge with the documentary clarity of the photographs, adding a new dimension to the scenes. Goldenberg, described by noted art critic Hilton Kramer in 2001 as "one of the most accomplished painters on the current scene," has exhibited his work in galleries throughout the United States.
