About The Work
San Francisco, California (1979) is one of the most famous self portraits from photographer Tseng Kwong Chi’s iconic East Meets West series. Here, Tseng has positioned himself rising aside the Transamerica Pyramid, the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco, dressed in his signature Mao suit, sunglasses, and stone-cold facial expression. Equal parts performance and photography, the artist presents himself as the “everyman” foreign tourist while simultaneously drawing attention to identity’s constructed nature, the latter emphasized by the artist visibly clutching the bulb of his shutter-release cable.
