Valerie Snobeck

In her sculptural practice, Valerie Snobeck utilizes techniques such as layering, fragmentation, and deconstruction; the readymade is also an important component of her work, and in Snobeck's treatment, the rich histories of such found objects emerge. As such, Snobeck focuses on uncommon materials—tar, burlap, denim, and even Depression-era glassware—giving equal weight to recclaimed items as to detritus or damaged matter.

Snobeck was born in 1980 in Wadena, Minnesota. She earned her BFA from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 2003, and her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2008. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe at institutions such as the University of Delaware and the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. Snobeck's work was included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. She lives and works in New York.
