In his Great Criticism Series, Wang creates links between the propaganda aesthetics of the Cultural Revolution and the striking imagery of American Pop art. While Wang typically juxtaposes idealized revolutionary figures against the blunt commercialism of foreign logos, here instead, the artist has iconized his own name. Perhaps, poking fun at the commercial success of China's contemporary art and even his own international superstardom, by finding a harmonious and powerful fusion between the East and West, past and present, Wang is able to question the moral philosophy and idealism in our contemporary worldview.

Wang Guangyi (born 1957) Harbin, Helongjiang Province, studied painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He is best known for Great Criticism, a series of paintings and prints that have become icons of the "Political Pop" movement, an influential avant-garde style of Chinese painting that emerged in the late 1980s. A blend of communist propaganda imagery and Western Pop Art, Wang's paintings are graphically striking critiques of both modern Chinese and Western consumer culture. Wang's work has been exhibited widely in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
