William Villalongo Bio

About The Artist

William Villalongo plays with deeply rooted art historical iconography by redefining racial and sexual politics in his compositions. He borders his work with looming plants, like ivy woven around the edge of his fantastical images. Central mythological and religious figures based on Grand Master paintings are placed in contemporary African-American and American contexts. Villalongo's work has been exhibited in El Museo del Barrio's biennale as well as MoMA PS1's Greater New York 2005 exhibition.
