Yanai Toister

The work of Israeli curator, critic, and photographer Yanai Toister is concerned with examining the conventions that surround his medium. Though his pictures of objects and buildings might classify him as an architectural photographer, Toister subverts the genre’s usual documentary fuction. Drawing on the viewer’s presumption of a photograph as a realistic and objective observation of the world, the artist subtly manipulates his digital images to alter their contexts, creating new meaning from otherwise familiar scenes and facilitating awareness of the intentional obfuscations present in almost every image.

Toister’s work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and the the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
