Yang Shaobin's paintings are explorations that engage with the corporeal experience of the individual in society and collective memory. Works such as Danger Encountered enter into the political realm, where scenes from media reports are interspersed with familiar faces of Western, Soviet and Middle Eastern leaders and personalities who haunt the surface of his canvases. These powerful portraits silently scream in tortured anguish and frustration—reminders of war, revolution, and the agonizing restraints imposed on the individual by contemporary society.

Born in Tangshan, Hebei Province in 1963, Yang Shaobin is an internationally recognized painter best known for his painful and often tortured subjects. The artist moved to Beijing in the early 1990s and joined an early avant-garde art group that was based near the Old Summer Palace. Influenced by Francis Bacon and Arnulf Rainer, Yang Shaobin says his works are often created to elicit discomfort or painful feelings from the viewer and to draw awareness of a social consciousness. The artist has exhibited extensively throughout the world, including Tate Liverpool, UK; Kunsthalle Hamburg, Germany; Essl Museum, Klosterneuburg, Austria; Museum of Fine Arts Bern, Switzerland and the National Gallery, Jakarta, Indonesia. His work was included in the landmark exhibition of the 48th Venice Biennale of 1999 and has also been included in several influential survey exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art.Read Less
