Yehudit Sasportas Bio

About The Artist

Yehudit Sasportas is an Israel-based artist who works in a number of media, including painting, sculpture, and video, to create what she calls “mental landscapes”—large format black-and-white images of natural scenes that transition from the serenely beautiful to the hazily disconcerting. Sasportas draws stylistic inspiration from the vast history of landscape painting, creating layered works that recall diverse sources, from mass media imagery to Romantic landscapes to or Far Eastern vertical scrolls. Sasportas’s images describe the present day’s conflicted relationship with nature, as she often chooses to depict charred and burnt forests along with lush and idyllic landscapes. The artist has recently begun working with film and computer animation, adding another level of experimentation to her already innovative creations.
