Yi Zhou

The Chinese artist Yi Zhou takes full advantage of new media, using the latest imaging techniques to make riveting video animations that bridge Eastern and Western visual culture. Her narratives are often inspired by classical literature, but unfold like Surrealist cinema; in The Greatness, which alludes to Dante's Divine Comedy and stars rap mogul Pharrell Williams, a shattered vase becomes a portal to the underworld. Yi Zhou has participated in international festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, the Venice Biennial and the Guangzhou Triennial; the United Nations commissioned her short piece "Clair de Lune" for its 2011 conference on climate change.
