Zarina Bhimji

Zarina Bhimji is a photographer and filmmaker renowned for her haunting images that interweave geopolitics, cultural memory, and personal narrative. A Ugandan-born artist of Indian descent, Bhimji was forced to leave Uganda at age 11 when General Idi Amin expelled tens of thousands of South Asians from the country. Bhimji's signature photographs and films of dilapidated architecture and abandoned interior spaces poetically refer to diaspora, persecution, and global migration. Bhimji was the subject of a midcareer retrospective at Whitechapel Gallery in London and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2002.
