Aaron Garber-Maikovska

Aaron Garber-Maikovska prompts a conversation between movement and human spontaneity found in his videos and painting, drawing, and installation. The artist’s training with Paul McCarthy at University of California can be seen in his attachment to the performative in the every day. His performances are based upon improvisation and desynchronization, in context-less environs including isolated parking lots where the sounds and actions of Garber-Maikovska’s body are the focus. Drawings and paintings mirror his interest in movement, where sinewy, dancing lines are applied to canvas as easily as they are to unorthodox materials such as a sleeping bag or palm tree. Bold black lines and bodacious color take on a rhythm not unlike the artist’s actual motion. Garber-Maikovska targets the contradictions between spontaneity and choreography, between the randomness and intention of feeling in the creative process.

Garber-Maikovska has exhibited at institutions including Fahrenheit (FLAX Foundation), Los Angeles, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, California, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, California, and a number of other international galleries.
