Agnes Jacobs

Consistently evolving, American artist Agnes Jacobs began her career after studying at the Art Students League in New York City. Known for her mixed media wall constructions, Jacobs’ recent monotypes are reminiscent of Henri Matisse’s cut-out style. The artist says of her practice, “painting for me is about spontaneity and play. The beginning is always suggestive of rich possibilities. I do not question the process, but let my inner emotions dictate the progression of the piece. For the last several years I have made monotypes. The use of mylar stencils in these prints has opened up new possibilities in painting, just as the wall constructions I created in the eighties and nineties deeply influences the paintings that followed. Although the work has changed over the years, my approach has stayed constant.”

Jacobs has shown her work with Addison/Ripley Fine Art in Washington, DC since 1993, with additional shows at Cheryl Pelavin, New York, NY, Eva Cohon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, Baltimore Museum, Baltimore, MD, and Hanoi College of Art, Vietnam.
