André Komatsu

Andre Komatsu creates drawings, sculptures, videos, and installations that address the construction and destruction of urban space. In West or Until Where the Sun Can Reach, a video work from 2006, he navigates São Paulo using a compass, taking the most direct possible path west, regardless of physical or legal obstacles. Alternatively, his sculpture Concrete Dissemination (2006) consists of his discarded clothes stuffed with rubble from building sites in the city. In this way he draws a parallel between the city and the body, both impermanent and subject to disintegration.

Komatsu has shown at a number of galleries and institutions, both in his homeland of Brazil, and abroad, including the Bronx Museum, New York, Simon Lee Gallery, London, Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, Illinois, Museu da Casa Brasileira, São Paulo, Galeria Vermelho, São Paulo and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan.
