    About The Work

An edition of 80, this print is a prime example of Anish Kapoor’s combination of formal qualities derived from 20th-century Minimalism with materials and processes that have a longer and more rustic history. Aquatint is a printing process whereby an image is etched onto a metal plate which is coated with ink and then pressed onto paper. The technique, which originated in 17th-century Amsterdam, has historically been used to render detailed fine lines and tones. As in Kapoor’s sculptural work, however, the artist’s aquatints are more concerned with negative space and the suggestion of infinity that it can invoke than with sharp figurative details. Aquatints are also often rendered in grayscale; Kapoor’s choice of a deep earth-tone brown heightens the physicality of his print.
