    About The Work

Arnulf Rainer’s series of Kreuz (“cross”) etchings, like his figurative over-paintings, investigate the meaning of the emotional states found in religious rites and Romantic ecstasies. The regal blue of the etching’s ground, contrasted by the vaporous gray marks in the foreground, enhance the power of the image’s ancient majesty.
