Carlos Rolon/Dzine

The artist Carlos Rolon, known as DZINE (pronounced "Design") creates work inspired by his upbringing within the subcultures of Chicago, spiritual and religious symbols, "Kustom Kulture," craft-making, and the baroque, resulting glitzy, bejeweled vehicles, heavily ornamented canvases, and intricate nail designs. In Luxembourg, a conglomeration of materials like custom jewelry, wax, and rubber adorn a vintage motorcycle in his signature baroque style, decorated with candlesticks and sparkles as it balances on a velvety, cushioned pedestal. Nail art and adornments for the fingers and hands, a significant and recurring motif for the artist, appear in many of Rolon's exhibitions and is celebrated in Nailed, a coffee-table volume that showcases outrageous, unique designs such as massively studded nails with clunky embellishments like pearls, gems, and money symbols, and entire hands covered in gold decorative shells.

Rolon has had solo exhibitions at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, the Flint Institute of Arts, and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan, among others. His works have been included in group exhibitions at numerous institutions including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and El Museo del Barrio.
