Chen Zhen

The sculptural installations of French-Chinese conceptual artist Chen Zhen (1955 - 2000) have gained wide international acclaim. A leading figure in the Chinese avant-garde, Chen merged traditional craft techniques such as weaving and nostalgic references to Chinese culture with modern consumer objects. This cacophony of symbols creates a conversation about history, healing, and place.

Chen Zhen’s work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo shows, including the 1999 Venice Biennale, MoMA PS1, New Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, Serpentine Galleries, Tate Liverpool, and National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
