Chris Engman

Chris Engman’s photographs act as a document to his sculptures and installations, capturing a series of elaborate processes and actions. Taking into consideration certain natural elements such as the movement of the sun, Engman incorporates a scientific and meditative thought process in his work. Says the artist of his practice, “Days are spent, sometimes with a crew but more often in solitude, silently driving, carrying supplies, erecting structures and sets, and studying the slow progress of the sun overhead and its all-powerful, comfort-giving and taking effects. I see my photographs as acts of reverence and participation in a deep, reassuring natural order outside of and much larger than myself.”

In 2013, Engman participated in "Staking Claim: A California Invitational," at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, and "NextNewCA" at the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA. He has presented solo exhibitions at Roski Fine Arts Gallery, Los Angeles, Flowers Gallery, London, Project B, Milan, Galerie Claire, Munich, and Greg Kucera Gallery and SOIL Gallery, Seattle, WA, among others. His site-specific environmental installation "The Claim" can currently be seen at High Desert Test Sites, Joshua Tree, CA.
