Gerwin includes passages of trompe l’oeil wood grain in his work as an allusion to hardwood floors, dinner tables, and furniture. These references place his paintings in the psychic space of home, a site of domestic dramas and endless quotidian moments.
Gerwin’s paintings have been shown most recently at 326 Gallery in New York, and he has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. His work has been reviewed in ArtCritical, Frieze, Hyperallergic, and other publications. He has taught painting, drawing, and theory, and he writes regularly about contemporary art for Artforum and Hyperallergic. His writing has also been published in ArtCritical, Blog of the LA Review of Books, The Huffington Post, On-Verge …
