Susanne Vielmetter, Los Angeles, CA
Elizabeth Neel's paintings rely on a controlled chaos that conflates a palimpsest-like understanding of imagery with a masterful facility for gestural mark making and layered abstraction. Incorporating organic and mechanistic references, Neel creates a hybrid iconography that tacks between mediums and moods. Resistant to facile representation, empirical observation and still life conventions mix with appropriated imagery, everyday objects, and abstraction in presenting a serial yet disjunctive ambience that is both playful and melancholy, archaic and spontaneous. In additions to her paintings, sculptures extend this tension into three dimensions as found objects, natural artifacts, and studio detritus join with painterly technique to form precarious assemblages.
She has had solo exhibitions at SculptureCenter in New York, Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in New York, Pilar Corrias in London, and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as Cluj Museum in Romania, Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, The Neuberger Museum at Purchase College, and Saatchi Gallery in London.
