Estefania Velez Rodriguez

Estefania Velez Rodriguez self-identifies as a code switcher, recognizing herself and her life in the library’s array of information.  Her paintings dissolve into abstraction but also coalesce to form images full of humor, biographical detail, and wisdom. As she writes, “I am a liminal creature that exists between oral languages, written languages, and abstract metaphorical bastardizations of many languages. I borrow from many volumes in the library.”

Velez Rodriguez has exhibited throughout the United States. Her first solo show, "False Catalogues" opened at Auxiliary Projects, Brooklyn, NY, 2019. Her group exhibitions include: Portray, Prey, Disobey, Lucas Lucas Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, 2019, Hot Melon Nest, Cunsthaus Gallery, Tampa, FL, 2018, Catch as Catch Can, Spaceworks Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, 2018, Fountain of Youth, Railroad Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, 2018, Detected Flux, Dixon Place, NY, 2017, among others. Velez Rodrigues currently teaches art at Rutgers University.
