James Richards

James Richards, the UK-born video and installation artist, creates work that is primarily concerned with the interaction of the body with space. The staging of his works therefore often takes on sculptural qualities that not only actively dissuade the viewer from passively watching but also consist of engaging, unique, and ambient installations. The videos themselves are defined by Richards’s appropriation and collaging of bits of films and photographs; often, Richards also includes his own original footage. 

Richards's 2013 HD video Rosebud is an interesting example of his work, as it moves searchingly between erotica and close-range images of nature, highlighting glittering puddles and streams. Richards aims to “de-familiarize” audiences with what they see on his screens, making even the most mundane images seem suddenly and startlingly new and mysterious.

Richards’s work has been exhibited at the 12^th Biennale de Lyon, Kunsthalle Malmo, the 55^th Venice Biennale, CCA in Kitakyushu, Japan, Kunstverein Munchen, Tate Modern, the Zabludowicz Collection, ICA in London and in New York, Artists Space, Performa 2011, and the New Museum. Richards received the Jarman Award in 2012.
