Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili

Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili’s photographs may initially appear accidental, but her snapshots juxtapose absence and presence with deliberate grace. She works both in the darkroom and with digital images, going so far as to create collaged and scanned negatives, integrating printed photographs into digitally-altered compositions. This variety of techniques addresses the physical complexity of photography—the process molds and affects the way in which the viewer digests the image. The photographed tableaus, some of which are darkened as if the shutter were malfunctioning, appear like a familiar memory with the elusive distance of a dream. Underhanded humor shines through in images that attempt to catch the climax of an event or interaction after it happened—producing a feeling of amnesia and longing.

Alexi-Meskhishvili has had a number of solo exhibitions since 2010 in London, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Milan. She has also exhibited at MAGASIN-Centre National d’Art Contemporain de Grenoble, Paris, the Chelsea Art Museum, New York, and Krakow Photomonth, Krakow, in 2011.
