Kudzanai Chiurai

Kudzanai Chiurai was the first black student to study fine art at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where he was named “Most Promising Art Student” in 2003. A member of what has been dubbed the “Born Free” generation (born after Great Britain granted Zimbabwe independence in 1980), Chiurai makes work focused on the social, economic, and political turmoil of his homeland. He has made bodies of work that address the brutality and corruption of President Robert Mugabe, as well as Zimbabwe’s HIV/AIDS crisis.
