Shaped by her upbringing amid Scandinavian forests and art books, Karin “Mamma” Andersson creates deeply psychological prints, paintings, and drawings, channeling her reference into theatrical genre scenes. Although she began her career with landscapes, she soon discovered poignancy in the disheveled domestic interiors and everyday scenes that upheld her suspended narratives. Thick layers of paint and loose washes illustrate skewed perspectives and irreconcilable space, inspired by the cinematic imagery of Dick Bengtsson. Her dreamlike scenes appear on the brink of calamity whilst maintaining the impressionistic air of Edward Hopper or Claude Monet.
Andersson has exhibited at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Camden Arts Centre, London, Aspen Art Musuem, Colorado, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, National Museum of Art, Osaka, and Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, among others. She represented Sweden in the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, and participated in the Berlin Biennale in 2003.
