Michael Paul Britto

New York-native Michael Paul Britto's work in video, performance, photography, collage, and sculpture examines current manifestations of racial inequality, the consequences of its continuing existence in America, and the price society pays for its denial. By recontextualizing and manipulating black popular cultural references with African-American history and traditions, Britto introduces provocative ideas that raise awareness of the way that we behave when confronted with racism.

Britto says, "Much of my work is about being a person of color in America, and the misconceptions and assumptions that go along with that. My art allows me to make people more politically and culturally aware, by using the customary as metaphor."
