Michelle Stuart

Michelle Stuart is recognized for pioneering the use of nontraditional, organic materials in art, such as earth, wax, seeds, and plants. Her work explores both the physicality of materials and also cultural and scientific issues ranging from history, biology, and botany to ancient sites and archaeology. Since the 1960s, Stuart has created a multifaceted body of work with projects ranging from massive outdoor installations, which in the past have included earthworks and waterfalls made of cascading paper, to much smaller gallery installations and works on paper.
