Nilbar Güres

Nilbar Güreş is a Turkish artist who lives and works between Vienna and Istanbul. Utilizing a performative approach, Güreş explores the notions of gender, identity, culture and oppression through the use of photography, collage, drawing, painting and video. Based on long-term research and cultural observation, Güreş creates staged theatrical narratives that are often humorous in their examination of relationship, and representation, with strong critical/political undertones.


Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1977, Güreş received her MA in Painting and Graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna; she currently lives and works betwen Vienna and Istanbul. Güreş has exhibited at museums internationally including The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art in Istanbul, the Schwules Museum in Berlin, the Malmö Konstmuseum in Malmö, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, among others. Selected exhibitions include the 20th Biennale of Sydney, the 6th Berlin Biennial, and the 11th International İstanbul Biennial, among others.
