Paul Hunter

Paul Hunter has spent his entire artistic career in pursuit of creating an intensely evocative radiance in his paintings. Most of his paintings depict memories rather than specific sites. These abstract imaginary landscapes are painted on gold and metal leaf to translate an impression of great luminosity. Hunter has lived and worked in New York since moving here in the 1980s after finishing his MFA in Montreal. As an artist, he has experimented with low-relief carving, printmaking, painting, and bronze sculpture. It was at a foundry, looking at the newly cast shining metal that it occurred to him to paint directly on a surface that was already luminous.
