Peter Combe
Peter Combe is an artist known for working with household paint swatches that are hand-punched into small disks in order to create abstract or realistic portraits of people. Combe focuses on tone and light reflectivity in his work, using over 1,100 colors organized into 28 groups. He arranges these swatches into a surface, creating tension between the three dimensional nature of the work and the flattening that happens when reading the image. He has an ability to subtly create a dramatic change in his portraits by experimenting with color and reworking his images multiple times. The interactive nature of his work, which requires the viewer to move around it, gives it a dynamic, transformative quality.
Combe has had works in public and private collections including
Laurence Hallier in Los Angeles, David Kensington in San Francisco, David Nazarian in Los Angeles, Sam Nazarian in Las Vegas, Mark Smucker in Ohio, and Chris Viehbacher in Boston. He has also participated in exhibitions internationally, including at Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Back Gallery Project in Vancouver, Luhring Augustine Gallery in New York, Andrea Schwartz Gallery in San Francisco, Galerie C.O.A in Montréal, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum of Fine Art in Florida State …
