Philip Aguirre y Otegui

Focused on creating humanistic artwork that directly confronts human tragedy, political events, and issues of migration and asylum Philip Aguirre y Otegui primarily creates thoughtful sculptures from traditional materials such as bronze, terracotta, wood, clay and plaster. His refined figurative sculptures make up a substantial portion of his work, integrating these classic forms with ambiguous objects and structures in a modernist tone. The relationship between figure and object often alludes to a somber and critical narrative of contemporary political and social conditions and individual identity. Otegui creates pieces that speaks to a universal audience, stripping his work of a romantic notion of man, instead speaking candidly to his audience.

Otegui’s recent solo exhibitions within Belgium have been held at Mu.ZEE in Ostend, Galerie Van De Weghe in Antwerp, Cultural Center in Nieuwpoort, Brussels Parliament, and Pocket Room gallery in Antwerp. In addition to numerous solo shows he has also contributed work to group exhibitions at locations such as Mas in Antwerp, Tweespoor Project in Turnhout, Fort Van Mortsel in Antwerp, and Charlottenborg in Copenhagen.
