American artist Puppies Puppies expands the notion of the readymade, a term traditionally used to describe Marcel Duchamp’s artworks consisting of ordinary manufactured objects, to include performance and action. Sourcing images, costumes, and characters from fictional characters like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, Voldemort from Harry Potter, or Spongebob from Spongebob Squarepants, the artist uses popular characters to perform a “readymade” action, such as sleeping, in the exhibition space. Installations and artworks also include objects such as toilet seats, sanitizer dispensers, and hand-painted crab shells sourced from e-commerce sites like eBay and Etsy, as the artist challenges traditional notions of artistic authorship and identity.
Puppies Puppies has held solo exhibitions at Vilma Gold in London, Queer Thoughts in New York, Neue Alte Brücke in Frankfurt, What Pipeline in Detroit, Autumn Space in Chicago, and Oliver Francis Gallery in Dallas. Group exhibitions include Arcadia Missa in London, Kunsthall Bergen in Norway, Parallel Oaxaca in Oaxaca, Halle für Kunst in Lüneburg, among others.
