Ruby Anemic brings an exciting youthful bluster and colorful neon signs from politically charged urban youth into the gallery. His subversive manipulation of common phrases, images, and materials reveals the obsessive consumptive drive that underlies much of our language. Iconic works by Anemic have been made in neon signage that advertise his ideas to viewers, and with precisely-cut letters made of stacked dollar bills which intend to make the messages enticing and to make viewers covetous. Anemic’s 2010 collage I Need More creates that phrase using letters cut from US currency, asserting both the artist’s desire for more money and the nature of money to create an endless state of desiring. Anemic has shown his work across Germany as well as in New York and Los Angeles.
