Stuart Whipps

Whipps works predominantly with photography and video alongside reconfigured existing or remade materials, creating installations and books that tease complex narratives out of historic artifacts and moments. Recent bodies of work have utilized diverse material such as the collected speeches, interviews and statements of Margaret Thatcher, collected pieces of Scottish shale and found negatives from redundant South African photographic labs.

Based in Birmingham he has exhibited across the UK and internationally and has received a number of awards for his work. Selected solo exhibitions include: Isle Of Slingers, Spike Island 2016, Bristol; Photo Colour Services, Ithuba Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa; Birth Springs, Death Falls, Flat Time House, London, 2013; selected group exhibitions include: British Art Show 8, UK, 2015 – 2017; Reference Works: Guangzhou, Guanghzhou, China, 2014; Relatively Absolute, Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire, 2013. In 2005 he won the Observer Hodge Photography Prize and in 2009 was the joint recipient of the East International prize.
