Initially trained as a painter, German artist Thomas Helbig has gone on to experiment with a number of techniques and mediums throughout his career, including sculpture, installation, and mixed media. Creating visual signifiers that “present manifestations of an alternate reality,” Helbig’s focus lies in the boundaries between space, movement and ephemeral imagery. Reminiscent of the mythic qualities of Suprematism, his work often incorporates a limited palette, emphasizing the drawn or painted element as an abstracted representation of some unknown familiar. Helbig has said that is pieces are “about reduction to an unrecognizable state from which something new can then evolve. Concealing, in order to reveal something, encrypting in order to make something visible.”
