Will Hutnick

Will Hutnick’s work asks questions about impermanence and place by conjuring queer landscapes that exist between moments of time, perception, and expectations. Throughout his work, camouflaged color and awkward shapes reveal themselves on their own time without a prescribed normative trajectory. By creating multiples and variations, and playing with notions of map-making and topography, Hutnick’s work explores how spaces - real, fantasy, queer - are constructed and assigned, and how malleable they actually are.

Hutnick received his MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in 2011 and his BA in studio art, art history, and music performance from Providence College in 2007. He has attended residencies at Yaddo, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, Wassaic Project, Trestle Projects, and Vermont Studio Center, among others. Recent exhibitions include Standard Space (Sharon, CT, solo), One River School (Hartsdale, NY, solo), LVL3 Gallery (Chicago, IL), Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Brooklyn), Geoffrey Young Gallery (Great Barrington, MA) and Vox Populi (Philadelphia, PA). Hutnick is one of the Co-Directors of Ortega y Gasset Projects, an artist-run curatorial collective and exhibition space in Brooklyn. He lives and works in Wassaic, NY.
