Jane Fox Hipple’s multimedia works are wall based, free standing and, on occasion, both. By painting on suggestive objects and impaling paintings with phallic materials and holes, a psychosexual undertone extricates the work from mere abstraction. Her subjects are mined from her indoor and outdoor studio and domestic life—the blunt tactility and use of non-art materials make for works that communicate longing in simple terms. Hipple’s pieces remain fairly monochromatic with hues that suggest interior flesh and bruising, which reinforces a perverse awareness of the body. Lascivious paint, considered placement of objects and graffiti-like text are the primary signifiers in works that integrate masculine and feminine forms through acts of sublimation.
