José Antônio da Silva

José Antônio da Silva (1909-1996) is Brazil’s most renowned self-taught folk artist. He took part in the first edition of the São Paulo Biennial in 1951, and subsequently in 6 others up until 1989. His work also represented Brazil at the Venice Biennale in 1952 and 1966. In 1955, his works were exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, USA. Twelve years later they were part of the exhibition “Popular Painters and Sculptors of Brazil” in Washington DC.
